How many diet crazes can you name? A few come to mind for me: the cabbage soup diet, the Atkins diet and the Paleo diet. While I don’t disagree with all aspects of these diet crazes—and I even follow a few of their principles—one diet craze that I’m happy has ended is the low-fat diet. We are truly starting to realize that it’s time to eat fat; that eating fat will not make us fat; and that certain low-fat foods are far worse for us than we first thought!
The key to eating fat is to choose the right fats so you can experience all the benefits! Avoid the fats found in junk foods, processed snacks and baked goods and opt for more healthy fats when possible.
4 Healthy Fats You Can Stock Up On and Enjoy Guilt-Free!
- Olive oil: While you should be careful of overindulgence, this is one time when it’s okay to eat fat! Lots of research shows that olive oil helps reduce your risk of various chronic diseases and elevates the antioxidants you can take in from sautéed veggies (vs. boiled veggies). Opt for extra-virgin olive oil to avoid the level of processing in other varieties.
- Fish: Your brain should be reason enough to eat fat! Fish is an excellent source of omega-3 fatty acids, which are crucial for brain function. Aim for at least 8 ounces a week to ensure anti-inflammatory benefits, too!
- Avocados: Guacamole anyone? This superfood has anti-inflammatory properties and can assist with vitamin absorption. Just be mindful of portions (an average avocado is approximately 230-240 calories).
- Nuts: Choose raw when shopping for this healthy fat. Nuts are a fantastic snack, easy to transport and come in a lot of varieties. They also contain significant amounts of amino acids, protein and Vitamin E.
Can you see why I’m happy the fat-free diet craze has come to an end? We can now lose the fear and eat some fat! So welcome back the tasty options listed above that can help protect against certain chronic diseases as well as boost your brain power!
